History of Oregon

Oregon was discovered by Captain Robert Gray in 1792. Oregon was inhabited by indigenous tribes like Molalla, Umpqua, Chinook etc. Two explorers Lewis and Clark also visited the place. The region abounded in animals with fur. A battle was fought in 1812 which led to the dominance of the fur companies by the British. According to history of Oregon, it was the bone of contention between the British and the Americans. There was an agreement signed between the Americans and the British which led to the formation of Oregon Territory in 1848.

Joseph Lane was proclaimed as the designation of Governor in Oregon. The constitutional set up was initiated in 1857. Oregon City was bestowed upon the status of the first capital of Oregon. The Oregon became a part of the Union as a state in 1859. Oregon witnessed Modoc War in 1872. American soldiers were replaced by soldiers who fought on horse- back. The city witnessed unprecedented boom in the industries of food, log wood etc. Oregon is riddled with conflicts since time immemorial.



Oregon has witnessed discords between the British and Americans , bourgeois and proletariat , the orthodox and the liberals . The history of Oregon has witnessed strifes between various philosophies , ideologies and doctrines . The social ,economic and political history of Oregon is the glaring example of variegated historical shades which left indelible imprints on it .
